What is a Water Bed Mattress

The Persians were the first to use a water bed in 3600 BC. This primitive type of water bed was made from goatskins. Today, we no longer use goatskins but we still have our new water beds. The question we have today is how comfortable is a water bed and is the price reasonable enough for an average family?

When looking for a water bed to purchase, remember that there are two kinds you'll find out there. You'll find hard side water bed mattresses and soft side type. A hard side type will have a solid frame containing the water bed mattress. The frames will look like your bed (that's the whole idea why you have a hard side model).

On the other hand, you have a soft side type mattress which also works just as well as other mattresses. This type of mattress is contained in a frame made of foam. A fabric, usually zipped covers the whole soft side type mattress (foam and all). The purpose is just the same as a hard side type where it should be designed to look like your ordinary bed.

The first modern day water bed was used in 1971, though Mark Twain made mention of a water bed in one of his articles as early as 1871. But the record was never clear as to the construction and description of Twain's water bed.

A water bed was patented in Portsmouth, England in 1883. The invention became a failure back then since there was no technology that enabled a customer to regulate water temperature.

In 1968 Charles Hall finally designed the modern day water bed as we know it today. And from there we now have today's water bed mattress.

Today's technology allows us to regulate the water temperature which adds to our comfort. This feature helps keep people warm in winter.

The warm temperature helps people with blood pressure problems. The warmth of the water bed mattress allows one to sleep easier and lower blood pressure. Blood circulation will be improved over time and you'll fall asleep easier since your muscles will be relaxed due to the warm temperature.

Disadvantages of a water bed mattress is that it can be costly, depending on the model and manufacturer. It will take some effort to move your water bed mattress since you have to drain it, move it to the next location, and then fill it up with water again. The risk of getting your water bed mattress punctured may be low, but be aware of the possibility of a leak to occur.

A water bed mattress is a great innovation of today. Just remember that you want to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of owning a water bed mattress since it really isn't for everybody.
